Why do you see the mountain as it is now? And what will it be like when you return?
when you come back to it? The "Refuges Sentinelles" itinerary takes you along a journey of discovery
of the treasures of knowledge...

Why do you see the mountain as it is now? And what will it be like when you return? The "Refuges Sentinels" itinerary takes you on a journey of discovery of the treasures of knowledge contained in these high places. The refuges where we will spend our nights are all part of a unique program in the Alpine arc, which brings together practitioners and professionals, from the valley to the summits. Are you curious to learn more about climate change, biodiversity, the imaginary of the mountain? The life of glaciers and their future? To meet scientists who are passionate about the mountains? And (of course!) want to stretch your legs? Then this trip is for you! And for the most motivated, it is even possible to get involved in participative research. Let yourself be tempted!

Description day 1: The departure is at the Col du Lautaret, with a first meeting with the researchers of the alpine station of the University of Grenoble. It is also the starting point of reflections and debates on the future of the mountain space, with regard to the scientific studies carried out among others from the station. Then we go up to the Alpe de Villar d'Arène refuge, for our first night in the mountains. The approach of the Alpe already allows us to put the knowledge present in the group in perspective: the panorama is a real exhibition of the facets of the practice of the mountain, as well as the evolution of this environment during the millenniums. It is not by chance that the Institute of Alpine Geography of Grenoble has chosen this terrain to produce two educational tours of geomorphology, for adults and children! During our first evening, Sabine will surely tell us about her experiences of 30 years of guarding in the high mountains Duration* : 1h30 Level : -100 m / + 150m

Description day 2 : We go up one of the three glacial valleys which arrive at the Alpe, in the direction of the lake of Pavé and its refuge, which has been entirely renovated. This is the perfect opportunity to take stock of the new technological requirements in terms of impact on the environment, but also of the challenges to be met for a refuge that has no running water! The Pavé lake was also the scene of some surprising scientific discoveries, which we will hear from Sophie, the janitor. And the impressive faces of the Pavé and the Pic Gaspard will also be the occasion to evoke another innovative aspect of scientific research in the mountains: vertical ecology Duration: 2h30 - 3h Ascent: +750m

Description day 3 : The third day takes us back down to Valfourche where we go back up to the sources of the Romanche, to branch off towards the Adèle Planchard refuge. This day has a serious difference in altitude and takes us to more than 3000 meters at the foot of the glacier that leads to the Grande Ruine. Sentinel of the evolution of mountaineering for several decades, this hut will speak to us about the changes in high mountain practices: what about glacier mountaineering today? Permafrost at altitude? What does the glacial retreat imply for the classic routes from the refuge? Duration: 6h Elevation gain: -750m / +1150m

Description day 4 : The fourth day sees us going back down to the Alpe but to stay in another refuge, the Chamoissière one. This jewel offers a completely different atmosphere: a former sheepfold, then a hunter's house, it has been entirely rebuilt with the material available around the refuge, and entirely by hand, according to the rules of art. Woodworking enthusiasts will be delighted to see the finishing touches. The guardians here are keen on history, and it is on this theme that I suggest you spend the evening with them. Duration : 3h Ascent : -1150m

Description day 5 : We still have to explore the last valley of this part of the Ecrins park, the one that goes up to the Arsine pass, at the foot of the Agneaux. A magnificent summit that we have in our sights from the start, its glacier has created a lake which is itself closed by an imposing moraine. We'll climb it from the pass to get a closer look at a major example of the current trend in high mountain topography. The rest of the day is spent relaxing and descending to the village of Le Casset, where we will take a local bus back to the Col du Lautaret. Duration : 3h30 Level : +300 / -900m
