Tour of the Ecrins comfort in freedom" stay
7 days
Difficult

The Pelvoux, the Meije, the Barre des Écrins: it is in an exceptional mineral universe that stand some of the most prestigious summits of the Alps. An itinerary not to be missed in the Ecrins National Park, without technical difficulty, for good walkers wishing to approach the glacial world.

From Vallouise to Serre Chevalier, via Champsaur, Valgaudemar and Oisans, Le tour des Ecrins is one of the Alps' legendary itineraries...

Day 1:

Drop off at the Hôtel Glaizette in L'Argentière-les-Ecrins. You climb up to the small village of Les Vigneaux on a balcony path running parallel to the Gyronde valley. Then you change banks to arrive in Vallouise, at the gateway to the national park.

Duration: 5h Ascent: 750m+, 550m-

Day 2:

Transfer to the ruins of Entre-les-Aigues, from where you reach the Col de l'Aup-Martin through the vast pastures of the Vallon de la Selle. Shortly after this first pass, the Pas de la Cavale (2735 m) opens up the Champsaur. You descend to spend the night at the guarded Pré-de-la-Chaumette refuge, nestled in the upper Champoléon valley.

Duration: 6h30 Difference in altitude: 1100m+, 1000m-

Day 3:

You head north behind the refuge for the Col de la Valette; beware, the descent through the schists can be slippery in wet weather. You climb back up to the Col de Gouiran and finally, after a fine descent, climb to the Col de Vallonpierre (2607 m). Picnic by the lake beneath the imposing mass of Le Sirac (3441 m). Short transfer to La Chapelle-en-Valgaudemar to reach your accommodation.

Duration: 7h Ascent: 1150m+, 1600m-

Day 4:

After a short transfer, you set off from Villar-Loubière for the Col de la Vaurze. The well-trodden path winds its way up in regular laces through varied vegetation to the little Souffles refuge, a haven of peace overlooking the valley and a welcome break. Up to the pass, you can admire the majestic Mont Olan (3554 m), before descending to Le Désert-en-Valjouffrey, a kind of end of the world. Transfer to Valbonnais and overnight in a B&B.

Duration: 8h Ascent: 1550m+, 1250m-

Hotel option: transfer to Valbonnais and overnight in B&B.

Gîte option: transfer to Valsenestre and overnight in a gîte.

Day 5:

Short transfer to Valsenestre, then a forest trail to the Col de la Muzelle.the Col de la Muzelle is well worth the effort: once you've reached it, the panorama of the Lac de la Muzelle (2100 m) and the imposing glacier reflected in it will soon make you forget the morning's effort! Descent to Venosc.

Hotel option: overnight in a hotel in Venosc.

Lodging option: transfer and overnight in the pretty village of Besse-en- Oisans.

Duration: 7h Difference in altitude: 1350m+, 1250m-

Day 6:

The crossing of the Emparis plateau, where herds graze facing the white summit of the proud "queen" Meije (north face), is unforgettable. From La Grave, you reach Villar d'Arène on foot along the Romanche, or by cab (optional).

Duration: 6h Difference in altitude: 800m+, 850m-

Day 7:

You reach the Arsine bridge. The route follows the wooded banks of the Romanche for a while, before rising to the alpine meadows of the Col d'Arsine. The Montagne des Agneaux and its glaciers, which you leave to the right, give rise here to the Petit Tabuc, an astonishing turquoise torrent that meanders through the meadows. After descending it, you arrive at Le Casset, the end of the hike. Transfer back to L'Argentière-les-Ecrins.
