Desert Museum

In the heart of a Cévenol hamlet and its typical alleys, in the house where the Camisard chief Rolland was born, the Musée Du Désert brings to life the Huguenot past and the history of the Camisards.

The Musée du Désert, built around the house of Rolland (one of the Camisard chiefs), retraces more than two centuries of French Protestant history.

In a series of twenty rooms, almost 3,000 objects, books and authentic documents are on display, bearing witness to the Huguenots' resistance for their faith over several generations in the face of the intolerance of the authorities. Among the items on display are the Desert pulpits, which could be folded away so as not to be compromising, Bibles of all sizes, and the forbidden psalters from abroad, from which the Huguenots drew spiritual nourishment to strengthen their faith, both in their assemblies and in their families.

In each room, explanatory panels provide background information and link to specific legends and emblematic objects from the story.
