History of a border - The Col de Tende
1 day
Easy

The Col de Tende has been for a long time a place of passage, between the sea and the plain of the Po, between France and Italy. In this place, within an extremely panoramic landscape and highly interesting for the fauna and flora that inhabit it, men have built during the 19th and 20th century several exceptional military fortifications.

The itinerary begins at the Col de Tende, a passageway used for thousands of years, where the Fort Central and its service barracks were built, and follows the border ridge that allows the discovery of many other fortifications, including the Fort Pernante. It continues to the plateau of the Fort of Giaure, the highest fortification of this defensive system. These fortifications are real architectural feats built in a severe environment like the mountain.

The panorama is sublime, in one glance you can see the Monte Rosa to the north and the Mediterranean Sea to the south.

The Col de Tende is also a place of passage for the avifauna, the dragonflies. It is also an ideal habitat for very interesting species like the black grouse or the bartavelle.
