The Sambucs Garden

ST-ANDRé-DE-MAJENCOULES

Description

In 2013, the French guild of garden journalists chose as their “Favorite of the Year” the Jardin des Sambucs.

This labyrinth of stone, pools, wild plants and horticultural treasures covers some 5000 m² of steep hillside in the southern Cévennes hills on the edge of the Mediterranean climate zone.
This contemporary country garden invites discovery and participation.
Visitors at les Sambucs are encouraged to make themselves at home: they may draw or paint, settle into the well-endowed garden library, meet an expert on Occitan plant traditions, learn how to make the old peasant “stone soup” with wild herbs, picnic on home produce imaginatively prepared, meander and meditate or siesta on one of the many brightly cushioned stone benches.
Few well-known garden photographers have resisted this stunning garden. Many visitors return over and over, and children are particularly welcome.
