Since 2017, the varietal collections of the island of Porquerolles are the support of a market gardening activity in organic culture. The harvested products are sold fresh or transformed and marketed in short circuit under the label of the gardens of Porquerolles.
Since 2014, the National Park of Port-Cros wished to entrust the maintenance of the orchards of collections of the island of Porquerolles to the Association de Sauvegarde des Forêts Varoises, within the framework of a workcamp of integration. From this partnership between the National Park, the Botanical Conservatory of Porquerolles and the association was born the COPAINS project (COllections PAtrimoine INSertion), an exemplary agricultural project, meaningful and generating links, based on sustainable development.
These orchards of collection welcome 269 varieties of fig trees and 50 varieties of mulberry trees. This diversity offers fruits with multiple shapes, colors and flavors. In addition, seasonal vegetables are offered all year round and are selected from old, local varieties that contribute to the preservation of cultivated biodiversity. A market gardening activity has been taken over since 2017 on about twenty hectares, in compliance with the specifications of organic farming. Thus were born "Les Jardins de Porquerolles".
