Discover a remarkable environment at the Cantonnière refuge, located at the entrance of the Mercantour National Park.
Located in a remarkable environment, in Estenc, the refuge is at the gateway to the protected area of the Mercantour National Park, an exceptional site in the upper Var valley. A former roadmender's building from the early 20th century, the refuge, now owned by the Mercantour National Park, has retained its mountain character and architecture.
The janitors, Anne-Marie and Philippe, will be happy to provide information on nearby activities such as hiking, snowshoeing, ski touring, cross-country skiing and climbing.
As the first stage of the Grande traversée du Mercantour, accessible by car in both summer and winter, nature lovers can enjoy numerous walks from the refuge in summer, alone, with family, friends or in a group; in winter, ski touring and cross-country skiing around the Refuge is a real pleasure, whatever your level.
The managers are keen to pass on good environmental practices and respect for the local environment, particularly in the kitchen, which uses fresh produce from local producers. The meals, always generous, are adapted to all types of diets!
