A new private art venue has been open to the public in the Var since June 2023. The Musée du Niel, located on the water's edge of the Giens peninsula in Hyères, is dedicated to painting from the second half of the 20th century, with a new thematic exhibition every season from May to October, highlighting the particularly innovative artistic currents that still influence contemporary creation today.

Located in the Port du Niel, on the Giens peninsula in Hyères, in a completely refurbished 1960s villa with terraces overlooking the sea, the Musée du Niel is part of the Réseau Plein Sud , which selects the finest cultural and artistic sites in the South of France. From May to October, the Musée du Niel invites the public to discover a new exhibition each season, bringing together some fifty different works each year.

The 2025 exhibition at the Musée du Niel brings together more than fifty works. "Dubuffet and the Magicians. Singular Expressions 1945 - 2000".

Dubuffet's artistic contribution and impact at the end of the Second World War were considerable. He "invented" art brut and gave this hitherto ignored or neglected form of singular expression a wide-ranging exhibition for the first time. At a time when abstraction was establishing its mastery over painting in France, at a time when figuration was resisting and asserting its traditional strengths, Dubuffet showed that there was an art that escaped the official canons, that escaped the usual channels of established culture; he invented a new source of inspiration, a new way of painting that escaped the major currents of art, and a revolutionary doctrine that shook up certainties. He innovated, destabilized and opened up new perspectives. He paved the way for magic and magicians.

To complete the visit, the museum store offers specialized books for art lovers, an art de vivre selection of handcrafted creations and creative notebooks for children.

The landscaped garden is freely accessible. The museum's terraces, with their exceptional views over the islands of the Parc national de Port-Cros, are the perfect place for a gourmet break throughout the day.

Mobility: the site is equipped for wheelchair users and cyclists. In high season, a free shuttle bus runs between the village of Giens and the Port du Niel.

The Musée du Niel is open from May 03 to November 02, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day except Tuesday.
