The history of salt in the heart of the Pesquiers salt marsh
Les Salins des Pesquiers
83400 Hyères
France
On 550 hectares, the Pesquiers salt marsh located in the heart of the Double Tombolo of the Giens peninsula in Hyères is one of the most remarkable natural areas of the Var coast.
Nowadays, it is the property of the Conservatoire du Littoral and is a protected area at the gates of the city. Exploited since the end of the 19th century, nowadays the site no longer produces salt. The preserved salt-making building marks the spirit of the place and its industrial past which will be approached throughout the visit. Discover more than 2000 years of history and salt culture through the trade and the life of the salt workers. Here, the history of salt and a preserved biodiversity are combined. The tour allows you to learn about the flora acclimatized to a brackish environment and to freely observe the birds that have found refuge in the heart of the salt pans.
