One of the key values of the Guadeloupe National Park is to contribute to the socio-economic dynamism of the area in which it is located, while ensuring the sustainability of the associated ecosystems. It was with this in mind that Christophe Latchman, a passionate farmer, set up his own farm over 10 years ago, introducing environmentally-friendly cropping systems combined with a laying hen farm.
With this in mind, Christophe Latchman, a fervent advocate of organic farming and agro-ecology in general, has been awarded the Esprit Parc National label. More than 10 years ago, this passionate farmer settled on a plot of land in the commune of Le Lamentin. On this half-forest, half-agricultural plot, he has set up environmentally-friendly cropping systems associated with a laying hen farm.
To achieve this result, he drew on his personal knowledge, acquired a few years earlier. For Christophe, agro-ecology (in the sense of agriculture that promotes the resilience of farming systems both ecologically and economically) is first and foremost a vocation. After studying agriculture in Guadeloupe, he quickly recognized the limitations of conventional farming and decided to continue his studies in the United States with a year's training in the principles of sustainable agriculture. Finally, it was through two years' experience on farms in various Latin American countries that he matured his project. In 2005, with the help of his partner Yvelise, he set up on the outskirts of the protected area of the Guadeloupe National Park. Despite a few marketing setbacks, the business developed well. On the strength of this initial experience, Christophe decided to become involved in the Groupement des Agriculteurs Biologiques de Guadeloupe (of which he is now president) in order to support the organic farming approach in Guadeloupe.
Unfortunately, in 2012, after several years of production, thieves and a pack of stray dogs attacked his small farm. The blow was hard, and the Latchmans gave up the business in favor of food jobs. However, a vocation is not so easily abandoned, and in 2016, Christophe finally plans to reinvest his 9 hectares of land to develop a project that combines permaculture, agroforestry and a Creole garden recognized as much for its environmental quality as for its cultural value.
By choosing to consume Christophe Latchman's baskets, you support this farmer's commitment to environmentally-friendly agriculture and social values. Christophe's baskets are made up of a variety of vegetables and fruit, depending on production. Baskets adapted for infants are also available to order.
Christophe Latchman favors direct sales of his baskets.
