Did you know that almost half of Reunion Island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site? Explore Reunion Island National Park and observe the exceptional beauty of its landscapes and its abundant biodiversity.
Pitons, cirques and ramparts shape the wild, vertiginous landscapes of Reunion Island National Park. They provide many wonderful viewpoints over the interior of this volcanic island, recognised for its beauty by UNESCO. A mosaic of gullies, “planèze” plateaux and calderas succeed each other to form landscapes each more sumptuous than the last.
Isolated in the heart of the Indian Ocean, Life found its way to the shores of Réunion Island by means of sea currents . Over the millennia, species such as the Reunion Island Day Gecko, petrels and Ruizia cordata have conquered this lonely fortress. By adapting, they have become endemic.
Due to this long natural history, the island is one of the 35 identified biodiversity hotspots on the planet. It is still possible to contemplate the diversity of its species, despite the threat posed to them by humans. Losing yourself in the island's living landscapes is a rare privilege, a life-size show not to be missed... and, above all, to be protected.
One of the most active volcanoes on the planet, issued from the bowels of the Earth more than 530 000 years ago, Piton de la Fournaise towers 2632 metres above Réunion Island. All visitors to the island fall under the spell of its lunar landscapes. Yet on the mountain's arid terrain, shaped by successive eruptions, remarkable flora has managed to adapt and persist. This exceptional spectacle reflects the resilience of Life.
The cirques of Mafate, Cilaos and Salazie are natural amphitheatres created by the island's volcanic activity, enveloping visitors in grandiose panoramas, each with its own special charm. At the heart of Reunion Island National Park, Mafate promises a unique experience for hikers venturing onto its lands. Far from any traffic, the cirque's many islets are best discovered on foot. Aurère, Marla, Roche Plate... in these charming Creole perched villages, life has adapted to coexist with a nature that is as demanding as it is generous.
Out of sight, the Pandanaie de La Plaine-des-Palmistes is a rare and precious source of biodiversity. Discreetly hidden away in the centre of the island, it is home to lush vegetation dominated by Pandanus montanus, a species endemic to Réunion. Ferns, orchids and green lizards flourish in the shade of its leaves. A remarkable habitat that is still preserved, a wonder of biodiversity waiting just for you.
